How does

Gravity

affect the IV?

  • If you don't use Gravity in your favor - your IV fluid/med/chemo/contrast will just SIT at that IV site until the patient CONTRACTS THEIR MUSCLES and 'milks the blood and infusate along' back to the heart........


  • [Hint:  That's why the IV infiltrates at that site - fluid is builing up, distending the vein, and leaking from the needle insertion site (and from the venule and venous capillary bed - per Starling's Equilibrium).]


  • Never heard of this before?  I KNOW!  Nursing, Rad Tech, and Paramedic programs do not teach this. 


  • Shouldn't they?
